Two rockets fired into Baghdad's Green Zone 'as one explodes near US embassy'

Two rockets have been fired into Baghdad’s Green Zone and one exploded near the US Embassy, officials have said.

Air raid sirens sounded in and loud blasts were heard in the area shortly after midnight, local time on Thursday (9pm, Wednesday UK time).

Iran launched missiles at US forces in Iraq on Tuesday night in retaliation for the killing of top Iranian General Qassim Soleimani in a drone strike.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility following the latest explosions in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, but it came as tensions remained high between the US and Iran.

Iraqi police said at least one rocket fell 100 metres from the US Embassy in the Green Zone, with the military saying there were no casualties.

US President Donald Trump had earlier signalled he would not retaliate over the strikes on Iraqi bases house US troops and said it appeared Iran seemed to be "standing down".

But Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Tuesday's strike was not necessarily the totality of the Middle Eastern country's response.

"Last night they [the US] received a slap," he said. "These military actions are not sufficient. What is important is that the corrupt presence of America in this region comes to an end."

Despite this, President Trump said the US did not necessarily have to respond militarily to Iran's attack on bases in Iraq as he confirmed no Americans were hurt in the blasts.

"The fact that we have this great military and equipment, however, does not mean we have to use it. We do not want to use it. American strength, both military and economic, is the best deterrent," he said.

"Our great American forces are prepared for anything. Iran appears to be standing down, which is a good thing for all parties concerned."
