Two roads closed after torrential rain sees rivers burst banks

Two roads in Oldham have been closed after torrential rain across the region saw rivers burst their banks and flood the area.

Stannybrook Road by Daisy Nook Country Park and Platting Road in Grasscroft have both been closed completely because of flooding.

Oldham Council posted about the closures on their social media channels, asking all residents to avoid both areas.

The post read: "Please avoid Stannybrook Road and Platting Road.

"Due to rising river levels, we've had to close both roads.

"They will be reopened as soon as the water drops to a safe level."

Stannybrook Road has been closed in both directions between Newmarket Road and Ashton Road, whilst Platting Road remains closed between Lovers Lane and the A62 Oldham Road.

The garden centre at Daisy Nook remains open, with access from the Ashton side of the park.

No timescale for any updates or possible reopening have been revealed by the authority, who have been contacted for further information.

The closures come as torrential rain hit much of Greater Manchester on Monday morning.

Further downpours are forecast throughout the rest of the day.

Train services have also been cancelled between Bolton and Preston due to flooding on the railway. Tanner's Lane in Golborne is also reported to be close due to flooding.

According to the government's flooding alert system, there is a "low risk" for flooding in the borough today, with some low-lying land and roads expected to flood because of overflowing rivers.

Tomorrow the risk will drop to "very low", as river levels are expected to drop.

There are three flood alerts currently active in Oldham, with the River Irwell and Upper River Calder both sitting much higher than ususal.

As a result, tributaries and surrounding areas are at risk of overflowing, with parts of Chadderton, Shaw, Lees, and Alexandra at risk of seeing some flooding today.

Officials are monitoring the water levels and will be providing updates to the flood alerts and warnings across the country.
