Two riders airlifted to hospital after being thrown from their horses in sand dunes

Two horse riders were airlifted to hospital after coming off their horses while riding in Merthyr Mawr sand dunes, near Bridgend.

The Welsh Ambulance Service was called to the scene around 4pm on Wednesday, August 25 where they assessed the casualties.

The two riders had reportedly been thrown from their horses while out riding and were found "deep in the dunes near the mouth of the River Ogmore".

At around 4:40pm, further support was requested from the Coastguard who dispatched teams from the Porthcawl and Llantwit Major Coastguard, and a coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon to assist with the recovery.

The two patients were airlifted to Cardiff and taken to University Hospital of Wales.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called on Wednesday 25 August at approximately 15:59 to reports of two people needing medical attention near Merthyr Mawr beach, Bridgend.

"We sent our Hazardous Area Response Team and a paramedic in a rapid response car to the scene, where we were also supported by the Coastguard.

"Two patients were airlifted to Cardiff and taken to the University Hospital of Wales."

A spokesperson from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: "At around 4.40pm yesterday, Porthcawl and Llantwit Major Coastguard Rescue Teams, Porthcawl National Coastwatch Institution and the coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon were sent to assist the Welsh Ambulance Service following a report that two horse riders had been thrown from their horses in Merthyr Mawr dunes.

"The casualties were assessed by paramedics and evacuated to hospital by the helicopter."
