Two remain in hospital following fatal crash on Sunderland Road in Gateshead

Two people remain in hospital following a crash that claimed the life of a man.

A 54-year-old suffered fatal injuries after the two-vehicle collision on Sunderland Road, in Felling , Gateshead, on Sunday evening.

Police say they were called to the area, at the junction of East Hill Road, shortly after 7pm.

They found that a Vauxhall Corsa, which was travelling west towards Gateshead , had been in collision with a Citroen Berlingo which was heading in the opposite direction.

The driver of the Corsa was pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin have been notified and are being supported by specialist family liaison officers.

A female passenger in the Corsa and the male driver of the Berlingo were both taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

On Wednesday morning, a spokeswoman from Northumbria Police said the two injured people were still in hospital and were in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the crash to come forward.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 946 080320 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
