Two remain in hospital after car crashed into tree on Gateshead roundabout

Two people remain in hospital after a car crashed into a tree on a Gateshead roundabout.

Four people were taken to hospital after the two vehicle collision near the town centre on Saturday morning.

The road was closed near the old Swallow Hotel, between Old Durham Road and High West Street for four hours while investigations were carried out.

Emergency services were called at around 8.30am and a doctor, believed to have been a passer-by, stopped to help at the scene.

Two people were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) in Newcastle and two others were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

Officers were carrying out a collision investigation and could be seen putting markers on the grass verge and taking photographs of the crash scene.

On Sunday, a spokesman for Northumbria Police confirmed that two people have been discharged while two others remain in hospital.

One of those people is said to have a "serious injury".

No arrests have been made.
