It comes after a 27-year-old, who was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit burglary, was released under investigation.

An investigation was launched after police were called to the Spar store on Hylton Road, Sunderland at 11.40pm on Friday after a car had been driven into the shutters of the store, before making off empty-handed from the scene.

Three hours late, shortly before 2.45am on Saturday, officers received a report that a car had been driven into the shutters at Sainsbury’s on Station Road, Fulwell, causing significant damage.

A quantity of alcohol was stolen before those responsible fled the scene in the same vehicle, police said.

The car was found burned out on Ridley Street in the Southwick area of the city.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Anyone with information is asked to get in touch using the Tell us Something/ Report an incident page on our website quoting reference 77 270320.

“Alternatively, you can contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
