Two police officers have been charged after shots were allegedly fired at a house party in South Belfast at the weekend.
The men, recent graduates of the PSNI training college, were with other off-duty officers in the domestic property at the time of the incident on Sunday.
They have both been charged with a number of firearms offences.
The discharge of weapons in which no one was injured, involved two Glock semi-automatic pistols - the type of personal protection weapon issued to all officers in the PSNI.
And all discharges of bullets must be reported and recorded.
Police officers are permitted to carry their PPW while off duty and many do.
The two officers were arrested and charged on Sunday after interview. They are expected to appear at Lisburn Magistrate’s Court in July.
The Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman is also investigating.
The PSNI's Professional Standards Dept are also dealing with a number of other off-duty officers who were at the house party at the time.
A source said: "The matter of breaching social distancing is a serious one and each of them has been spoken to and disciplinary action may follow after an internal investigation."
A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Police are investigating an incident at a private residence in Dunmurry on Sunday, June 7.
"Two off duty police officers were arrested and have since been charged with a number of firearms offences and are both due to appear at Lisburn Magistrates Court on Thursday 2 July.
"The Office of the Police Ombudsman has been informed."
