Two potential venues on the table for Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin rematch

Dillian Whyte’s rematch with Alexander Povetkin could be staged in Gibraltar or Monaco.

Promoter Eddie Hearn has announced their second fight will take place on March 6 and says he is speaking to a number of overseas venues.

Povetkin caused an upset when he won their first clash at Matchroom’s behind-closed-doors Fightcamp in August and Hearn says Whyte is keen to fight in front of a crowd.

“We’ve spoken to some quite interesting ones, a couple in the Middle East,” said the Matchroom MD.

“We’ve also spoken to Gilbraltar and also to Monaco.

“I think the feeling from Dillian is, he would like crowds for that fight. He would prefer that fight in front of some kind of crowd, but even in the territories I mentioned, there’s no guarantee that will be the case.”

Hearn was speaking as he announced his next five shows when boxing resumes next month, starting with Josh Warrington’s defence of his IBF featherweight title against Mexican Mauricio Lara on February 13.

Hearn has had to delay Warrington’s unification clash with WBA champ Can Xu until late April because of the pandemic and says he may have to vacate his IBF belt to avoid facing mandatory challenger Kid Galahad again.

“We’ve got a situation with Kid Galahad where he’s the mandatory challenger,” he said. “Josh Warrington was supposed to be fighting Can Xu, Can Xu needs to fight in front of fans so we’re delaying that fight until the end of April.

“There is an issue with the IBF in that he has to fight Kid Galahad and we are tying up a deal with Kid Galahad.

“You may see Josh Warrington vacate the IBF belt after the February 13 fight because he wants to fight Can Xu or Gary Russell and he may not be able to with the IBF.

“We’re making sure everyone is happy for that belt to be on the line on February 13.”

Hearn also announced Lawrence Okolie will finally get his world title shot when he faces Krzysztof Glowacki for the vacant WBO cruiserweight title on March 20.

All his UK shows are likely to be held at Wembley Arena again and he expects to confirm that with the British Boxing Board of Control in the coming fortnight.
