Two police officers 'seriously injured' after single vehicle car crash on M90

Two police officers have been seriously injured after a single vehicle car crash on the M90 on Sunday night.

The marked BMW police car was the only vehicle involved in the crash which took place at 9.30pm on the northbound lane on the M90 at Kelty in Fife.

It is understood the officers were responding to a report of a drunk driver.

One officer was removed from the car by fire crews and rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

He was later transferred to Western General Hospital in Edinburgh with neurological injuries.

A second officer was taken to Ninewells Hospital with back injuries.

Chief Superintendent Stewart Carle tweeted that his thoughts are with 'both my officers' after the serious crash.

He wrote: "I heard dreadful news just after 11PM last night that a @polscotrpu crew crashed on M90 near Kelty responding to report of drunk driver, & seriously injured.

"Grateful to motorists who assisted rescue & 999 responders who gave treatment. Thoughts with families of both my officers."

Three Scottish Fire and Rescue crews were dispatched to the scene alongside paramedics.

Motorists are being asked to avoid the road which remains closed.

Diversions are in place.
