April 17--Two police officers were among five people hospitalized early Friday after a West Side crash that caused a police SUV to flip over, officials said.
The two-vehicle crash happened about 12:10 a.m. near the intersection of South Homan Avenue and West Congress Parkway.
A police SUV was traveling northbound on Homan when it was struck by a black sedan traveling westbound on Congress, said Officer Ron Gaines, a Chicago Police Department spokesman.
The SUV was struck on its passenger's side, causing it to roll onto its hood and slide before coming to rest near an alleyway on the block.
The two officers were transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. They're injuries were not life-threatening.
A 19-year-old woman who was driving the black sedan was taken to John H. Stroger Hospital along with another woman who was in the car, police said. A man was also inside the car at the time of the crash. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. None of their injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
Police said traffic citations were pending against the 19-year-old driver early Friday.
Following the crash, police taped off a stretch of Homan between Harrison and Van Buren streets. All the street lights and traffic lights between Congress and Glayds Avenue were out as officers guarded the scene. It was not immediately clear if the lights had been out at the time of the crash.
