Two points for a 45 motion passed at LGFA Congress

Two points will be rewarded for a 45 that is struck from the ground and goes straight over the bar in ladies Gaelic football after the LGFA passed a motion at their Congress yesterday.

The ball must go over the bar unassisted and untouched for the score to count double.

A 45 deflected or tapped over by another player will only see one point awarded.

The proposal gained large support and sailed through the vote at the Lough Rea Hotel.

The new rule will officially come into use on May 1.

The rule change significantly increases the value of long-range free takers in the ladies game, as well as the value of going for a goal chance, with two points potentially on offer should an effort on goal be tipped wide.

“To signal a two-point score, the umpire shall wave the white flag and at the same time raise his/her other hand to point directly upwards,” the motion also clarified.

Another 45-related motion - one to outlaw a backwards pass from the free kick - was defeated.
