Two people taken to hospital after Upper Hunter highway crash

Two people have been taken to hospital after a crash in the Upper Hunter that left them both trapped in a vehicle.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter and NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the Golden Highway at Merriwa about 5pm on Saturday after reports of a high-speed crash.

The Westpac chopper's critical care team stabilised a 20-year-old man and a woman in her 20s before Fire and Rescue NSW freed them from the vehicle.

The man was air-lifted to John Hunter Hospital with multiple injuries while the woman - believed to be his girlfriend - was taken by road to hospital.

Both were in a stable condition on Saturday evening.
