Two people taken to hospital after police chase ends in horror smash in Rochdale

Two people have been taken to hospital after a police chase ended in a horror crash in Rochdale.

A scene of devastation was left after a red Vauxhall Astra, which was being pursued by police, collided with a black VW Golf.

Officers on patrol spotted the suspected stolen Astra on Kingsway at around 11.30pm on Sunday (9 May).

A short chase ensued after the vehicle failed to stop, before it crashed into the black VW Golf on Queensway, police said.

Police are hunting two men, described as Asian and aged 20-25, with beards and wearing dark clothing, who fled the Astra on foot.

A third occupant of the Astra was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the black Golf was also taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Queensway was closed in both directions following the crash, as police carried out their investigations.

Airbags in the vehicle also appeared to have been deployed during the crash.

A black Volkswagen could also be seen with the roof cut off.

Police have launched an investigation following the smash, and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

So far, no arrests have been made.

A spokesperson for GMP said: "At about 11.30pm on Sunday 9 May 2021, officers spotted a suspected stolen vehicle on Kingsway in Rochdale.

"A short pursuit ensued and the vehicle, a red Astra, collided into a second vehicle, a black VW Golf, on Queensway.

"Two men - described as Asian males, aged 20-25, with beards and wearing dark clothing - fled the Astra on foot towards the Balderstone area.

"A third man, a passenger in the Astra, was taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

"The driver of the second vehicle, a black Golf, was also taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries.

"No arrests have been made and police are appealing for witnesses."
