Two people taken to hospital after motorbike crash in Benton

Two people have been taken to hospital after a collision involving a motorbike in Benton.

Emergency services were called to Benton Road, close to the junction with Manor Road, at around 5.40pm following reports of a crash between a car and a motorbike.

Police closed the road in both directions as paramedics arrived to treat two patients, both believed to have been on the motorbike, who were found lying in the road.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman confirmed they had suffered broken legs and were taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for further treatment.

There is still a large police presence at the scene with two collision investigation units conducting inquiries.

Traffic is being diverted via Fairways Avenue while police continue their investigation.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "We were called to the collision between a car and a motorbike on Benton Road at 5.40pm.

"Police and the ambulance service have attended the scene and a cordon has been put in place.

"Two people have been taken to hospital. Officers remain at the scene at this time."
