Two people taken to hospital after house fire in Stanley

Two people were taken to hospital after a blaze broke out at a County Durham house.

Firefighters were called to Elm Street, South Moor, Stanley, at around 11.30pm on Thursday after a fire broke out in a terraced house.

The woman living in the property was taken to hospital along with her next door neighbour.

A spokesman for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service said an investigation is ongoing to establish the circumstances.

He said: “We were called to reports of a terraced house on fire at around 11.36pm and sent three applicances with an officer.

“Two appliances from HIgh Handenhall fire station and one from Consett attended.”

Two ambulances from the North East Ambulance Service were also called.

The spokesman added: “The individual living in the property along with the gentleman living next door were taken to hospital after suffering smoke inhalation. They are both out now.”

It is not yet known what caused the fire, he said.

“A joint investigation is underway with the police to establish the cause of the fire,” he added.
