Two people taken to hospital after HGV collision in County Durham

Two people have been taken to hospital following a collision involving a lorry.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Sedgefield, County Durham, on Wednesday afternoon following the crash between an HGV and a car.

Police closed Butterwick Road between A689 Beacon Lane and Salter's Lane while officers cleared the scene and drivers were told to avoid the area.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service confirmed that they dispatched four resources to the scene, including two Hazardous Response Area Teams.

Two people were then taken to North Tees Hospital.

A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called to reports of a two-vehicle road traffic collision in Butterwick Road, Sedgefield, just after 2.15pm this afternoon.

"The collision involved a Suzuki car and a HGV.

"The A689 has been closed while emergency services attending the scene and drivers are asked to avoid the area.

"The drivers from both vehicles have been taken to hospital."

The road has since reopened.
