Two people taken to hospital after crash on A1 in Northumberland

Two people were taken to hospital after a car crash on the A1 in Northumberland.

Emergency services were called to the A1 at the Swarland junction just after 7.15am where two cars had collided, leaving debris strewn across the road.

The road was partially blocked as emergency services worked on the scene and paramedics checked over the two drivers.

Photos taken in the moments after the collision show a badly damaged black car with parts littered on the carriageway.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We were called to a report of a two-vehicle collision at the A1 intersection with Swarland, northbound, at 7.21am on Monday."

They added that the two drivers were treated by paramedics for minor injuries.

Three fire crews from Pegswood, Alnwick and Amble stations were sent to the scene just before 7.30am and worked to help the police and ambulance service.

Two people were then taken by ambulance to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care hospital in Cramlington.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service (NEAS) said: "We were called at 7.21am to reports of a road traffic collision on the A1.

"We dispatched two resources and transported two patients to the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care hospital."

The road was fully reopened and cleared by 10.30am.

Earlier on Monday, emergency services were called to a three-vehicle crash on Hexham Road in Blucher, near Walbottle.

The NEAS spokesperson added: "We were called at 6.51am to reports of a road traffic collision in Hexham Road in Blucher.

"We dispatched three resources and transported one patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary."
