Two people have been seriously injured in a crash on the A69 in Northumberland.
Emergency services were called to the three-vehicle crash on the Haydon Bridge Bypass at 7.25am on Wednesday.
Police swiftly closed the road in both directions as three fire crews were called to rescue two casualties who has become trapped inside vehicles.
The air ambulance was also requested to land at the scene with two people being taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A Northumberland Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "We received a call at 7.35pm following a multi-vehicle collision on the A69 at Haydon Bridge.
"We have got three pumps at the scene - two from Hexham, one from Allendale - as well as a specialist rescue unit from West Hartford.
"Crews have helped to release two people who were trapped inside vehicles.
"Northumbria Police are in attendance as well as the air ambulance."
The A69 remains closed in both directions at Haydon Bridge crossroads with drivers urged to avoid the area if possible.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "Police received a report of a collision on West Road, Hayden Bridge on Wednesday, October 9.
"At about 7.25am officers attended the scene where three vehicles had collided.
"The road is currently closed at the western end of the road.
"Two people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
"Officers, fire and ambulance service remain at the scene."
