Two people injured in serious crash on Prince Consort Road in Gateshead

An injured driver was cut free from their car by firefighters after a serious crash in Gateshead.

Just before 4pm on Friday, two vehicles, including a taxi, collided on Prince Consort Road, in Bensham, outside the Ann Street Garage.

Police, firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene and one driver had to be cut out of their damaged car.

During the emergency service call out, the road was closed between Gladstone Terrace and Bewick Road.

Both drivers, a man and a woman, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

A third person with minor injuries was thought to be making their own way to hospital.

Three ambulances and two fire engines were called to the scene.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Shortly before 4pm today, police received a report of a collision on Prince Consort Road, Gateshead.

"It was reported that two vehicles had collided outside Ann Street Garage.

"Emergency services attended and both drivers, a man and a woman, are being taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries."
