Two people injured as car plunges onto railway line during high speed police chase

Two people were rushed to hospital with serious after their car crashed onto a live railway line during a high-speed police chase.

Police attempted to stop a black Honda Civic on Inveresk Road, Musselburgh , at around 2.40am on Thursday morning.

However, the driver of the car drove off before officers could intercept the vehicle.

After a short spell speeding away from the police, the car left the road and plunged down a banking onto the live railway tracks near .

Both the driver and the passenger of the vehicle were rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

An eyewitness previously told the Daily Record that the driver of the vehicle reportedly fled the scene, leaving his female passenger inside with a ‘broken leg’.

The 27-year-old man driving the car is due to be reported in relation to road traffic offences.

No arrests have been made so far and detectives looking into the incident say that enquiries are ongoing.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "A black Honda Civic on Inveresk Road failed to stop for officers and after a short pursuit the vehicle left the road coming to a stop on the railway tracks close to Sir Harry Lauder Road.

"The driver and passengers of the vehicle were taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The 27 year old male driver will be reported in relation to road traffic offences. Enquiries remain ongoing."

Railways workers were reportedly called the scene shortly after the incident to assess the damage to the lines.


All services running to and from the station have been running as scheduled since the incident was cleared up earlier today.
