Two people have been arrested for begging near Tesco - police said they were not homeless

Police have arrested two people for begging outside a supermarket who were found to not be homeless.

Officers said the pair were harassing and verbally abusing customers near to Tesco, off Bury Old Road, in Cheetham Hill.

In some instances the beggars used foul or abusive language and also urinated in public, according to police.

A statement posted on the Greater Manchester Police North Facebook page said they were not homeless.

Some people commented to say they were approached and asked to get money from a nearby cash machine.

The duo were arrested earlier today.

A post on Facebook said: "The team have been out and have arrested two for begging near Tesco, Cheetham Hill. Why?

"They were harassing customers, using foul, abusive language and urinating in public amongst other reasons.

"Both were not homeless. Each arrest is based on the individual case and only ever when necessary."
