Two people from London caught in Wales after travelling to climb Snowdon

Two people from London were turned around by police after driving to Gwynedd to climb Snowdon, Wales' highest mountain.

The driver and passenger were reported in Llanberis for breaking Covid-19 lockdown rules, which advises people to stay at home and avoid all non-essential travel.

On Thursday (April 23), North Wales Police said: "Residents of Llanberis are abiding by Covid-19 guidance. Sadly two people from London felt differently yesterday [Wednesday], and decided to drive all the way here so they could walk up Snowdon.

"Thankfully, with the help of the local community, we were able to stop the vehicle. Driver and passenger were duly advised and sent on their way… but not before being reported for offences under Covid-19 legislation.

"North Wales is currently closed to visitors."

With Wales in week five of lockdown, police forces have been sharing the excuses given by people flouting the current government guidance.

In the last seven days, Gwent Police said they had been told by residents:

  • "I’ve just been to feed the fish"
  • "I’ve been to buy nail clippers for the dog"
  • "My son is a rubbish cook so I take him food every day"
  • "I’ve bought a new catapult and wanted to try it out"
  • "I’m giving my friend a lift to collect her car that had been seized for no insurance"
  • "No idea what you are talking about? I don’t watch the news what's going on???"
  • "My dogs need different areas to walk otherwise it affects them"
  • "How much is the fine - I will take it?"

In Wales, the only reasonable excuses to leave home include shopping for necessities, taking a daily form of exercise, travelling to work, helping a vulnerable person and to attend your local health service.
