Two people die in M6 crash that closed motorway for nine hours

Two people have died after a serious crash on the M6.

The crash, which happened on the northbound carriageway between J32 and J33 north of Preston, closed the motorway for around nine hours.

Emergency services, including police, fire crews and paramedics, rushed to the scene.

But sadly, the driver of the car and the front seat passenger were both found dead at the scene, LancsLive reports.

Their next of kin are being informed.

The carriageway was closed for almost nine hours following the incident while collision investigators examined the scene - reopening just before 1am today (Friday).

There was a lot of congestion in the area, with Highways England reporting delays of at least 60 minutes northbound and seven miles of traffic.

Diversions were set up, but this also caused gridlock through Preston with the A6 Garstang Road in Fulwood affected in particular.

Detectives are urging anyone who witnessed the crash - which happened at around 4pm on Thursday (August 12) - to come forward.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "We were called at around 4pm to reports of a collision on the M6 motorway between junction 32 and 33.

"Officers attended and sadly two people, the driver of the vehicle and the front seat passenger, were pronounced dead at the scene.

"Their next of kin are being informed and our thoughts remain with them at this time.

"The northbound carriageway remained closed for several hours while collision investigators examined the scene.

"Anyone who witnesses the incident is asked to contact us on 101 quoting log number 1125 of August 13."

Three fire engines attended and helped to make the scene safe.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 16:21hrs to reports of a road traffic collision on the M6 motorway, northbound carriageway between junction 32 and 33.

"Three fire crews, from Preston, Fulwood and Lancaster attended and assisted in making the scene safe."
