Two people dead after suspected axe attack in Sydney

Two people have been killed in a suspected axe attack in Sydney.

Police were called to a home in Cartwright, in the south west of the city, at around 4pm local time (5am UK time) following reports that two people had died during a neighbour dispute.

They found a man and a woman suffering serious stab wounds, according to Australian news site 9News.

The man died at the scene and the woman was rushed to hospital with critical injuries, where she later died.

"Police from the Liverpool City Command attended and they found a male and a female had been stabbed," NSW police Superintendent Adam Whyte told 9News.

"Unfortunately, the male died at the scene and the female passed away a short time later at Liverpool Hospital."

Police said the man and woman had gone to a neighbour's property when the incident happened, but would not confirm what weapon was used.

A man, barefoot and in a grey t-shirt, was pictured being escorted into the back of a police van in handcuffs.

He remains in custody and is assisting with inquiries, NSW Police said.

For concerned residents, this was a specific attack. It was not random, they (the man and woman) have come here to these particular premises so I don't think others have anything to worry about," Supt Whyte said.
