Two people have died and a major highway was closed for several hours after a truck and car collided in the NSW Northern Tablelands around midday today.

NSW Police said the 22 year-old female driver of the Suzuki hatchback and her 16-year-old female passenger died at the scene on Ruby Hills Road, 11 kilometres west of Walcha.

A 23-year-old male passenger was flown to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition, while an eight-month-old baby girl was unharmed and taken to the same hospital for assessment.

The truck driver was uninjured and taken to Walcha Hospital for mandatory testing.

The Oxley Highway was closed between the Walcha Saleyards and Bendemeer for about five hours as officers from the Crash Investigation Unit set up a crime scene.
