Two people cut free after crash closes M5 to traffic northbound near Weston-super-Mare

Two people had to be cut free from their vehicles after a lorry and car crashed on M5.

The smash has caused hours of delays as emergency services closed the busy motorway in both directions while they rushed to help those involved.

Great Western Ambulance Service attended the collision, which occurred between junction 22 for Burnham-on-Sea and junction 21 for Weston-super-Mare at around noon.

Two people were taken hospital.

It's unknown at this stage the severity of the injuries, but the crash was described as a "serious incident".

Traffic was held on the motorway, prompting scores of people abandoned their vehicles and attempted to cool down on the carriageway as temperatures peaked at 23C.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire Rescue said: "The fire service were called to assist other agencies with a road traffic collision where a car and a caravan had overturned and people were believed to be trapped.

"One crew from Burnham-on-Sea and, two crews from Bridgwater and the rescue tender from Glastonbury attended.
