Two people arrested after alleged police assault, man charged after allegedly tripping, spitting at police

A woman and a man were arrested on Henley Beach Road.

A woman has been charged with assaulting a police officer in Adelaide's western suburbs, while another man has been charged after allegedly tripping an officer and spitting at police.

In the first incident, a police officer was trying to arrest a man they say was drunkenly walking on Henley Beach Road at Underdale about 9:00pm.

During the arrest of the man, a woman approached the police officer and allegedly assaulted him by hitting him on the head.

The 52-year-old man from Yattalunga was charged with disorderly behaviour, resist and hindering police.

The 33-year-old woman from Henley Beach South was charged with assaulting a prescribed emergency worker, resist and refusing to state a name and address.

The man was bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on August 20 while the woman was refused bail and will appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.

SA Health Minister Stephen Wade condemned the alleged assault, saying there was no excuse for such incidents.

"It is always concerning when people are assaulted, doubly concerning when those people are emergency service workers, police or first responders," he said.

"We are backing our police [and] backing our courts to hold people accountable for that behaviour."

Another officer assaulted at Kurralta Park

In a separate incident, a man was charged after allegedly tripping a police officer and allegedly spitting at police at Kurralta Park.

Police said a man was reportedly walking on the road at the busy intersection of South Road and Anzac Highway at about 4:15pm.

Police attempted to move him off the road but he refused to move and he allegedly tripped an officer as they attempted to restrain him.

It is further alleged the man spat at police.

One officer received treatment for a minor injury to his hand, police said.

The 48-year-old man from Hove was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital for a mental health assessment before being discharged.

He was charged with two counts of assaulting a prescribed emergency worker, resist and remaining on a roadway.

He was refused bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.
