Two people airlifted to hospital after serious crash closes Ceredigion road

Two people have been airlifted to a Cardiff hospital with serious injuries after a van crashed into a tree in west Wales.

The collision, involving just one vehicle - a white coloured Renault Traffic van - happened on the A487 near the village of Synod Inn in Ceredigion around 5.30pm on Monday, May 3.

Police officers, firefighters, paramedics and crews from Wales Air Ambulance and the Coastguard all attended the scene of the crash.

After colliding with a tree on the side of the road, one occupant was thrown from the van and another was trapped inside and had to be cut free by firefighters. Following critical care from medics at the scene, both occupants were airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff - one by a Wales Air Ambulance helicopter and one in a search and rescue aircraft.

The road was closed in both directions for several hours as a result of the crash, re-opening in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “On Monday, May 3, at 17:40, crews from New Quay and Aberaeron responded to calls reporting a road traffic collision near Synod Inn.

“Upon attendance, crews were faced with one light goods vehicle that had collided with a tree. One occupant was thrown from the vehicle as a result of the collision, whilst the other was trapped inside. Crews used hydraulic cutting gear and small gear to extract the trapped casualty before handing them over to the Welsh Ambulance Service. Crews left the scene at approximately 8pm.”

Police are now appealing for anyone who witnessed Monday evening’s crash to get in touch, especially anyone who may have dashcam footage which could assist their investigation. If anyone has any information about the incident they are asked to contact Dyfed-Powys Police online, by e-mail at 101@dyfed-powys.pnn.police.uk, or by calling 101.
