Police charge driver over double fatal crash in Port Augusta

Police on Caroona Road, Port Augusta West, where two people were killed in an alleged hit-and-run crash.

Police have charged the driver of a car that allegedly hit and killed a man and a woman in South Australia's north.

The man has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a crash and one count of aggravated driving without due care.

Officers say the pedestrians were hit by a grey or silver Toyota Kluger SUV on Caroona Road in Port Augusta West about 2:20am.

The vehicle then allegedly drove away, heading south.

It is unclear whether the two people, a 50-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman, both of Port Augusta West, were deliberately hit.

They died at the scene.

Police said the driver of the four-wheel drive attended the Port Augusta police station about midday.

He is due to appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Monday.

The vehicle was located just after 12.30pm and is undergoing forensic examination.

Simon Kretschmer and other neighbours heard a noise in the middle of the night and hoped it was just a kangaroo that had been hit.

He said it turned out to be much worse.

"It seems to be a very tragic situation," he said.

Major Crash officers are investigating the scene.

Caroona Road is closed between Hartley Street and Addison Road.

Police have asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
