Two parts of south Liverpool have much higher Covid rates than the rest of the city

Two parts of south Liverpool have significantly higher coronavirus rates than most parts of the city.

Data published by the city council at the end of last week suggests that the infection rate in Liverpool as a whole stood at 270.9 per 100,000 people in the week up to October 5.

The 1349 cases recorded across those seven days marked a fall of 113 on the previous week in an encouraging sign.

However, a number of areas have infection levels that are significantly higher than that.

Childwall is currently recording the highest coronavirus rate in the city, with 454.5 cases per 100,000 people.

Nearby Cressington has the second highest rate at 441.3 cases per 100,000 people. St Michael's, also in south Liverpool, has the third highest rate.

The lowest infection rate is currently being recorded in Princes Park, which neighbours St Michael's, while wards in and around the city centre are also recording lower rates than average.

The report said: "Data extracted covering testing up to 5 October 2021 show that the total number of confirmed cases for the last 7 days is 1349, a decrease of 113 cases on the previous week.

"The latest weekly rate of COVID-19 in Liverpool is 270.9 per 100,000 population and the latest positivity testing rate is 6.5%."

It comes as health experts continue to strongly recommend anyone who has not yet been vaccinated to do so, with Liverpool's vaccination rate lagging behind the UK average.

Many doctors and health professionals have warned of the likely difficulties this winter as they continue to battle Covid while also dealing with a likely increase in flu case numbers this season.

Anyone who is eligible for the flu vaccine is also being urged to take up the jab.

The new phase of the vaccine rollout is seeing it extended to children in Liverpool's schools, who are set to be vaccinated if their parents give consent.
