Two out, one back in for Steve Bruce at West Ham as Newcastle United boss delivers injury update

Steve Bruce has revealed that the trip to West Ham has come too early for Matt Ritchie - but Andy Carroll is in the squad for the trip to his old club.

The Newcastle boss has also confirmed that Fabian Schar has not pulled through in time for the clash against the Hammers.

Both Ritchie and Schar will be assessed again for the home game with AFC Bournemouth.

But Bruce was happy to welcome back Carroll after he missed last week's draw with Wolves due to a groin injury.

Bruce said: "Andy had a groin injury which had nothing to do with his ankle, we will keep asking the question and we hope he will remain OK, but for this weekend he is available for selection which is good.

"Fabian, we will see if he is OK for Bournemouth.

"If not we will see what he's like during the international break.

"His knee has been sore for a while so we will see.

"We don't think it's too serious."

Bruce has also left Florian Lejeune out of the squad for West Ham but he is recovering well from a long-term knee injury.

He said: "He is going to play again on Monday night at Aston Villa.

"Hopefully, he can get 75 to 80 minutes.

"If he gets through that we have the international break and then he will be available."

Bruce also reflected on Sean Longstaff's red card against Wolves with the midfielder starting his three-game ban this weekend.

He said: "I have looked at it two or three times.

"We all understand that if you go to ground now and catch your opponent you are in danger of a red card.

"Even if he catches the ball clearly his leg was in a position it shouldn't be."
