'Two of the best!' Some Spurs fans are loving what Rafael van der Vaart has said to Peter Crouch

Rafael van der Vaart remains a popular figure among Tottenham fans after the Dutchman's efforts in north London.

The attacking midfielder netted 28 times in 77 appearances in all competitions for Spurs between 2010 and 2012, having joined from Real Madrid.

During that time, he played alongside Peter Crouch, who has today (Friday) announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 38, having spent the second half of last season at Burnley.

Crouch and van der Vaart were both part of the Spurs' squad that reached the Champions League quarter-finals in the 2010/11 season, in the club's debut campaign in the competition.

And van der Vaart has been one of many players to send a message to his former team-mate after his announcement today, with the Dutchman posting on social networking website Twitter.

He wrote: "One of my all time favorite strikers @petercrouch retires. We shared a hobby: scoring goals and having fun on and off the pitch. Thanks for being such a great guy Crouchy, wish you all the best!"

And van der Vaart's message has gone down well, not just with his former team-mate, but also with Tottenham fans, who have been reminiscing about some of the pair's best moments together.

Responding to van der Vaart, Crouch simply wrote: "Love you Rafa xx", while some Spurs fans took to Twitter to respond to the duo's exchange, as can be seen below.
