New sponsor on board as Newcastle United remove Sports Direct logos at weekly Press conference

Newcastle United chiefs have replaced Sports Direct logos on the club's media advertising hoardings.

The Sports Direct logos were substituted for clothing firm Barbour's branding at Steve Bruce's Press conference on Friday morning.

Toon players are expected to wear Barbour branding on their approach to the ground on Saturday as part of a promotion.

Mike Ashley has been back to the club's training ground in recent days to discuss transfers with Bruce.

Back in November, Sports Direct announced it would be renamed Frasers Group as part of rebrand exercise from Ashley.

A Sports Direct spokesman said then: "Once solely a leading international retailer in sports apparel, the company is now equally as successful in the lifestyle and luxury markets.

"With the enhancement of its retail proposition continuing to be a strategic priority, the proposed change in group name is central to the focused delivery of the company’s elevation strategy."

When asked about his meeting with Ashley, Bruce said: "It went very well. We showed what we are trying to do, and he was fully supportive.

"We have plates spinning and hope to add to the squad by the end of the month.

"We have said that the targets have to improve us. He has been fully supportive of the remit.

"He agrees we buy quality not quantity. That has to be the mantra."
