Two new primary schools will open months later than planned in Swansea

Two new primary schools with places for nearly 1,000 Swansea pupils will open months later than planned.

A range of factors have delayed the delivery of YGG Tan-y-lan and YGG Tirdeunaw, which were supposed to open next autumn.

Cllr Jennifer Raynor, cabinet member for education improvement, learning and skills, told cabinet colleagues that the new date was February 22, 2022.

"I am confident that both buildings will be available before the February half-term in 2022, but given the Covid restrictions it is wise to plan for further unforeseen delays," she said.

Cllr Raynor said a re-design of YGG Tan-y-lan, Beacons View Road, Clase, to increase its size further had required a fresh planning application to be approved.

She said building work was progressing rapidly but that a lot more work below ground has had to be carried out.

The construction envelope, she said, was now 76 weeks rather than 52 weeks.

The £9.9 million Welsh medium project, which has been designed to accommodate 420 pupils, will replace the current YGG Tan-y-lan in Morriston.

A second planning approval was also required for YGG Tirdeunaw, on land at Penlan's YGG Bryn Tawe.

Cllr Raynor also said that changes to drainage legislation "meant going back to the drawing board", resulting in a four-month delay.

The £11.5 million school - designed for 525 pupils - will replace YGG Tirdeunaw in Treboeth.

The construction cost of both Swansea schools is being shared by the Welsh Government and the council.

Cllr Raynor told the cabinet meeting that both governing bodies had been consulted about the new timeline and that the schools were confident they could manage any increase in pupil numbers - a result of catchment area changes taking place next September - between that point and February 2022.
