Two new mental health wards open at Stobhill Hospital following £11m development

Two new mental health wards have opened in Glasgow following a £10.7m development.

Stobhill ACH (New Stobhill Hospital) has officially opened the doors to its purpose-built wards in the north east of the city.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde say the design of the facility marks the future of inpatient care in mental health facilities in Scotland.

The two wards - Elgin and Appin - will have space for up to 40 inpatients. Elgin will be dedicated to adult acute mental health inpatient care while Appin will focus on older adults with functional mental health issues.

Each patient will have an individual room, with WiFi and access to iPads and laptops to keep in touch with loved ones and have virtual visits during the pandemic.

An internal garden courtyard has been landscaped with flowers and herbs for a "peaceful space for contemplation and visiting".

Janice Naven, Inpatient services manager for Stobhill Mental Health Services, said: “We’re thrilled to open the doors of the new wards to patients. The modern, well thought out design has created a really positive environment for mental health patients and will play an important role in facilitating their treatment and recovery.

“Furthermore, the wards mean more patients are able to receive a range of therapeutic interventions which are planned, co-ordinated and provided from a multidisciplinary and patient perspective with a key focus on rehabilitation, discharge and recovery.”

The new facilities were delivered through the partnership of hub West Scotland, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) and Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP).
