Two new Covid cases confirmed at Whitley Bay High School

Two pupils at a North Tyneside school have tested positive for Covid.

The youngsters are in Year Nine at Whitley Bay High School.

Both are currently self-isolating.

In a letter to parents on Friday, the school's headteacher confirmed that "all those who have been in close contact with the confirmed cases" have now been identified.

In April it emerged t hat six pupils at the school had tested positive for the virus during the Easter break - including at least one who was asymptomatic.

It followed tougher rules for pupils once they returned to the classroom earlier this year, including regular testing and face masks during lessons.

And in today's letter, headteacher Steve Wilson wrote: "These two cases highlight the importance of the twice-weekly lateral flow testing that students and staff are carrying out to identify cases and prevent the spread of the disease."

The school is currently recommending pupils take a test during the middle of the school week, and another prior to returning to school on Monday.

While North Tyneside has struggled in recent weeks with the fast-spreading Delta variant, latest figures suggest the spread of the strain is starting to slow.

After cases were more than doubling week-on-week, in the past seven days, the infection rate has increased by just 7.5%.

And Government figures show that Whitley Bay isn't currently a North Tyneside hotspot for the virus in North Tyneside, although nearby West Monkseaton has had 13 new cases in the past week.
