MYSURU: Two century-old landmarks of the city – Lansdowne Building and Devaraja Market, which are located just outside Mysuru Palace – will be pulled down as they have outlived their utility and are declared fit for demolition, Karnataka urban development minister BA Basavaraju said on Friday.
In their place, the government plans to construct near-replicas of the iconic buildings at a cost of Rs 145 crore.
Both buildings are not structurally stable because of their age. A part of the 130-year-old Lansdowne Building collapsed in August 2012, leaving four persons dead. After the incident, the Mysuru City Corporation, its custodian, vacated the tenants and closed the building for renovation. However, a seemingly dilapidated Devaraja Market is still holding on as the hive of city’s trade activities.
