Two MSU football commits drafted in MLB Draft

Jase Bowen and Adam Berghorst have decisions to make.

The Michigan State football and baseball signees were drafted early Wednesday in the MLB Draft. Bowen, a standout shortstop, was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 11th round of the draft. Berghorst, a pitcher with a power arm, was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 14th round.

Both will now have to decide whether or not they will continue their football and baseball careers in East Lansing with the Spartans or if they will sign with their respective organization and get their professional baseball career started.

Their decisions will sway partly on signing bonuses each are offered to play professional baseball. In the first ten rounds of the draft, signing bonuses are predetermined. Starting with round 11 teams are able to offer whatever they want for signing bonuses, with prospects in the 11th and 14th rounds usually offered something around $100,000.

Bowen had 828 rushing and receiving yards to go with 12 TDs his senior season at Toledo Catholic Central. He also returned two kicks for touchdowns and projects to be a receiver at Michigan State.

Berghorst is a big and athletic defensive end out of Zeeland East and projects to stay at that spot for the football team and with a 92-94 MPH fastball, pitch for the baseball team.

We will continue to monitor the story and will provide updates when available. Congratulations to both guys on getting drafted.

UPDATE 1:10 PM

Adam Bergorst may have a decision tonight.
