Two motorcyclists taken to hospital following M2 collision

Two motorcyclists have been taken to hospital following a collision with a car on the M2 today.

A section of the motorway in Belfast was closed following the incident at 2.15pm today, when two motorcycles were involved in a collision with a red Volkswagen Beetle.

There was a large response from the emergency services with police, multiple ambulances and the air ambulance attending the scene.

Both lanes of the motorway, between Fortwilliam Roundabout and Duncrue Street, were forced to close as the helicopter landed in the carriageway.

The collision caused severe traffic disruption in the area, with some drivers reporting waiting in queues for over an hour.

Two motorcyclists were injured in the collision and after being treated at the scene by paramedics, were taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital.

A Northern Ireland Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 14.52 on Friday, 04 September 2020 following reports of a three vehicle RTC at Duncrue to York Street, Belfast.

“NIAS despatched two Emergency crews, one Doctor and one Rapid Response Paramedic to the scene. The charity Air Ambulance with HEMs crew on board was also tasked to the incident.

“Following assessment and initial treatment at the scene, two patients were taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.”

The Motorway reopened at around 6pm and police are now appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have dashcam footage of it, to contact them.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "The M2 motorway in Belfast has now re-opened following a three vehicle road traffic collision earlier this afternoon.

"A red Volkswagen Beetle car and two motorcycles were in collision at around 2.15pm approaching Belfast between Fortwilliam and the Docks. The two male motorcyclists have been taken to hospital for treatment following the collision which caused severe disruption to traffic for a number of hours.

"Officers are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have captured the collision on dash-cam to contact them at Sprucefield on 101 quoting reference number 995 04/09/20."
