Two more plans for HMOs in Newport city centre submitted to council

Plans for two more house sharing facilities in Newport city centre have been lodged with the council.

Proposals for two new houses of multiple occupation (HMOs) have been submitted to Newport City Council this week.

They include plans to convert the first floor of 149 Chepstow Road - currently used for financial services - into a four-bed HMO, as well as plans to turn 17 Caerau Road into a seven-bed HMO.

The proposals, which are by separate applicants, are the latest in a series of applications for HMOs in Newport city centre.

Last summer WalesOnline reported on the city street which residents said was being wrecked by HMOs. Last week we also covered the Cardiff suburb which is home to more than half of the city's HMOs.

In recent months controversial plans to turn a house on Ombersley Road into seven bedroom HMO were approved by planners. A six-bed house in St Julians was given the green light in September, while a five-bedroom HMO on Morden Road was also passed in November despite 24 objections from residents.

If passed, 17 Caerau Road will encompass two en-suite bedrooms and a communal kitchen/living area on the ground floor, three en-suite rooms on the first floor and two en-suite rooms on the second floor.

Neither proposal includes off-road parking but the applicants have stated that parking could be accommodated on adjacent streets.

The plans will now to go planning officers for consideration with a decision in due course.
