Two more coronavirus deaths recorded in Bristol

Another two people in Bristol diagnosed with coronavirus have died, bringing the city's toll to 256 since the pandemic broke out.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released its latest data set yesterday (October 6) for deaths linked to COVID-19, up to the week ending September 25.

In that week, two deaths were recorded for Bristol - one in a hospital, and one in a care home.

This is up from no deaths the previous week, and one death the week before.

The figures are based on the number of deaths registered up to October 3, where COVID-19 is mentioned on the death certificate.

Of the 256 Bristol deaths recorded between the start of the outbreak and September 25, 115 were in hospitals and 123 were in care homes.

There were also 12 deaths at home, three in hospices, two in other communal establishments, and one elsewhere.

Other communal establishments include prisons, halls of residence, hotels, and sheltered accommodation, while elsewhere covers deaths outside and people declared dead on arrival at hospital.

In a separate government spreadsheet, neither of Bristol's hospital trusts have recorded any coronavirus-related deaths for months.

The ONS has previously advised Bristol Live that its deaths data records location by a person's usual address, rather than where they died, so it is possible that a Bristol resident died in a hospital outside of the city.

This is why the number of deaths recorded by the hospital trusts will not match that recorded by the ONS - because some patients in Bristol hospitals will not necessarily be Bristol residents.

The latest daily coronavirus figures from yesterday recorded 103 more cases across all four areas in the Bristol region.

It marked the fourth time in four consecutive days that the local figures have topped 100, after ministers advised of a 'technical issue' that had led to a backlog.

Another Public Health England release suggests that 96 people tested positive for COVID-19 in Bristol in the week ending September 27, compared to 82 the week before and 60 the week before that.

The infection rate per 100,000 people was 20.7 in Bristol in the week ending September 27, up from 17.7 the week before, and 13 the week before that.

Hospital admissions in the South West linked to coronavirus are still low but have been creeping up.

There were 0.8 admissions per 100,000 people in the week ending September 27, which is a rise from 0.54 the week before, and 0.24 the week before that.
