The incidents were notified to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre last week.

It brings to five the number of children under the age of 14 who have been treated in intensive care for coronavirus in Irish hospitals.

Statistics released by the HPSC today also show that one further toddler under the age of 4 has been hospitalised with Covid-19.

There are now 43 youngsters in that age bracket who have been admitted to hospital due to the disease since the pandemic began.

However the vast majority of hospitalisations and ICU admissions remain in people over the age of 65.

In the 65-74 age bracket, a total of 147 people have been rushed to intensive care since the first cases were announced here.

Meanwhile earlier today, health officials confirmed that six further people have passed away from the virus.

It brings the total death toll here to 1,896.
