A two-month-old baby has been killed by the family dog as she slept near her parents.
The little girl was asleep in an electronic swing next to her parents bed when the German Shepherd launched the "vicious" attack at their home in Virginia, US.
A police statement said the parents were woken up by a "large amount of motion".
They tragically discovered that the child had fatal dog bite wounds.
The mum called emergency services who rushed to the scene at around 3am but sadly the infant was pronounced dead.
Meanwhile the dad took the dog outside and shot him dead.
Hampton Police Sgt. Amanda Moreland told the Daily Mail: "It was more than just one dog bite, but it also wasn't a mauling per se.
"But also the child was very young, and they're just more fragile."
The family, whose names have not been reported, claimed the eight-year-old dog had not previously shown aggressive behaviour.
