Security forces killed three militants in a night-long operation in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, the police said on Wednesday.
A police spokesman said here that the gunfight at Melhoora left three terrorists dead. “The identity of the terrorists is being ascertained. The medico-legal formalities are being done,” the spokesman said.
The encounter broke out after an operation was launched on the basis of an input about the presence of terrorists at Melhoora on Tuesday evening. “The search operation was launched by the Shopian police, the Army’s 55 Rashtriya Rifles and the CRPF’s 178 Battalion. The hiding terrorists fired at the search party that retaliated,” the police said.
The police spokesman said three jawans sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital.
The police said arms and ammunition were recovered from the site.
The house, where the militants were hiding, was blown up to flush them out, local residents said. One of the killed militants is believed to be a ‘commander’ of a militant outfit.
