Two metre rule relaxed to let Glasgow kids play together outside

Young children will be able to play properly for the first time in months, after Nicola Sturgeon revealed she's changed the rules just for them.

Under 12s will be able to meet up outside in small groups for fun and games, in news that's likely to delight them and their parents.

The First Minister explained: "We want to help children enjoy the summer holidays a bit more. We also know that the clinical risks of Covid for children – particularly for younger children – appear to be relatively low, although we will never be complacent about that.

"And we know that while there are restrictions on the number of households we can meet, families might find it difficult to balance the social needs of children and adults.

"Understandably, you don’t all want to see the same people every day."

The physical distancing rule has been removed for the under 12s from tomorrow, for groups of less than eight and from no more than three households. They must also remain outside, the usual two metre rule remains indoors.

Ms Sturgeon told youngsters: "This will enable you to play more normally with friends, which I hope you will enjoy.

"I’m sure this move will also be appreciated by your parents and carers."

Adults with children should continue to observe the two metre rule.

Physical distancing will remain in force for 12 to 17-year-olds, along with the eight people from three household limit. However, the restriction on the number of these meetings in a single day has been removed.

Ms Sturgeon added: "That means that you can meet different groups of friends at different times of day.

"And it also means that you won’t be prevented from meeting your friends, just because your parents or carers or your brother or sister happen to be meeting their friends."

Children's outdoor contact sports are also likely to be given the go ahead to restart from July 13 at the First Minister's next lockdown review on July 9.
