Two Merseyside schools make it onto Sunday Times Top 10 Schools list

Two Merseyside secondary school have made it onto the Sunday Times Top 10 North West Schools list.

The list ranks the North West's top state and independent secondary schools based on results of GCSE and A level exams.

The Blue Coat School is the only Liverpool school to make it onto the list while West Kirby Grammar is the only other Merseyside school to appear on the list this year.

Top performing schools in   Northwest are revealed in Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2020, published in The Sunday Times and online this Sunday, November 24.

Parent Power identifies the 2,000 highest-achieving schools in the UK, ranked by their recent examination results.

Bluecoat and West Kirby Grammar's ratings come during a challenging time, after provisional GCSE results suggested worrying trends for the city's results.

Liverpool has plummeted down national rankings for English and Maths, coming 129th out of 150 English local authorities for the proportion of students who get Grade 5 or above in both subjects.

Under  the new GCSE system , students receive numbered grades between 1 and 9, with 9 being the best and Grade 5 being the equivalent of a C under the old system.

Two years ago  Liverpool  was ranked 76th in the same table.

Councillor Murray, who oversees schools as part of her education brief, said: "We have a problem with the  quality of education  across all the schools, even the better performing ones.

"I think it is not right allocating children at 11 to schools that are failing and we are doing that at the moment."

A fully searchable national database by school name, local authority, town and postcode, together with regional rankings are available to Times and Sunday Times subscribers at:  thesundaytimes.co.uk/parentpower

As well as assessment of all academic results on a school-by-school basis, Parent Power   enables parents to compare the performance of a given school with other schools in the same town, local authority or nationally.

There are also live links to school websites and schools’ most recent inspection reports.
