Two men who shot 13yo girl during home invasion in Canberra jailed for 10 years each

Two men found guilty in the ACT Supreme Court of shooting a 13-year-old girl and a man during a Canberra home invasion last year have been sentenced to a combined total of 21 years in prison.

Reece Salcedo and Nathan Brian Stretton were found guilty by a jury in May and on Friday sentenced to 10 and 11 years' jail respectively.

Salcedo will serve a non-parole period of five years, while Stretton will not be eligible for parole until 2024, because of other offences.

Justice Chrissa Loukas-Karlsson urged the pair to use the time behind bars to lay the foundation for a better life.

"You are both young men and you can both make something of your lives," she said.

"Please do not waste your lives and the lives of the people around you.

"You'll have the opportunity while in custody and when you are released to prove yourselves.

"Please do that."

The court heard the man who lived in the house had a drug-dealing business with a woman and their arrangement had gone sour.

He had removed the keys from the woman's car and left her stranded, throwing them out of his car window just up the road.

Salcedo and Stretton had gone to the house armed, in a bid to retrieve the keys.

The pair forced entry into the home, with a fight breaking out between them and the male victim.

He attacked the intruders with a metal bar, chasing them out of the home.

The perpetrators shot him while trying to escape the property and also struck the 13-year-old girl, who suffered superficial wounds to her back and buttocks.

Both men were found guilty of recklessly inflicting grievous bodily harm on the girl and intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm on the man.

They were also found guilty of trespassing with an intention to harm and threatening grievous bodily harm.
