Two men who died after fire at Morecambe working men's club named

Two men who died following a fire at a working men's club in Morecambe have been named by police.

John McCartney, 60 and Philip Townsend, known locally as Tony, 70, were rescued from the blaze by fire crews on Wednesday afternoon, but sadly died a short time later.

Their families have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

The fire broke out at Gordon Working Men's Club at around 3.50pm and 10 fire engines, along with multiple ambulances and two helicopters, attended the scene.

Nearby businesses were evacuated while firefighters attempted to put out the fire.

Eye witness Jean Lamb, who owns Albert Road Antiques & Collectables, described "an awful smell outside" and told Lancashire Live: “I went outside but there were no signs of fire engines at that point - but there were loads when they did turn up.

"Loads of police in both marked and unmarked cars and a helicopter."

A joint investigation between police, Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and the local authority into the cause of the blaze continues.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lancashire Police on 101 quoting log number 0803 of October 9th.
