Two men taken to hospital with serious injuries after crash in South Shields

Two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries after a crash in South Shields.

The pair were injured after a Seat Leon crashed into railings and a wall on the A194 in the Tyne Dock area, close to the Port of Tyne entrance, at just after 3am on Sunday.

Emergency services attended and the eastbound carriageway was closed while paramedics treated the patients at the scene before taking them to hospital.

The carriageway was closed for a number of hours as investigation work took place before it reopened later on Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "Just before 3.30am this morning, police received a report of a one vehicle collision on the eastbound A194 near Port of Tyne in South Shields.

"A Seat Leon car was reported to have collided with nearby railings and a wall. Emergency services attended the incident and two men were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Pictures taken by a passer-by later in the morning showed the car being taken away by a recovery vehicle, with significant damage to the front of the Seat.

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers via the Northumbria Police website, quoting log 232 of July 5.
