Two men rescued after trying to save dog that fell into water in East Lothian

Two men have been rescued by the coastguard after trying to save a dog which had fallen into a stretch of water.

The pair dived in to the sea at East Lothian on Saturday, May 9 to save their pet which had fallen over a seawall.

However they both became stranded on rocks close to the former Cockenzie power station.

Scottish Fire and Rescue crews managed to pull the dog from the water, but called in the coastguard to help with the two men, who had become cut off.

Kinghorn Lifeboat recovered the men to shore on Saturday afternoon (RNLI)

The Kinghorn RNLI crew were called at 1.30pm and managed to rescue the pair.

Trainee helm Megan Davidson said: “Both were taken to Cockenzie harbour where they were checked by an ambulance crew and reunited with the dog.

“In these situations we would always recommend not entering the water and calling for help whilst keeping the stranded animal in sight.

“We appreciate that you don't wish to see your pet in difficulty but they invariably manage to get out themselves.”
